We are North West Bikers (Cumbria)

Where it began

North West Bikers (Cumbria) also commonly known as NWB, is a “Motorcycle Riding Group” which was first established by a

group of Cumbrian like-minded motorcycle enthusiasts in the summer of 2017.

We originally set out to create a riding group where everyone’s welcome, regardless of their ability, the licence they hold or

the bike that they ride, a group where help, support and advice would be offered. Our expectation was that we would probably

end up with 60-100 members with which we could regularly ride with and have some fun. That number naturally grew as

word spread and we now have more than 2400 active members from across Cumbria.

In 2021, NWB registered as an incorporated business and has continued to donate more than 75% of all profits to local

charities and good causes. We are committed to embracing NWB’s growth and to nurture its continued development.

A community of bikers, for bikers.

Our Progress

On Wednesday 29th July 2020 the group organised our first 1000 Members Charity Ride from Workington to Keswick with over 250 bike riders coming along to form a convoy. The fundraising event raised a total of £1081.55 for local charity Blood Bikers Cumbria.

To build on the success of the first event, the North-West Bikers Facebook group decided to organise a Christmas Charity Raffle during December 2020, due to the winter weather not being ideal for bike riding and raised a further £1100. All prizes were kindly donated by local people and businesses with the money raised split between The Fire Fighters Charity and Blood Bikers Cumbria.

The group continue to meet and organise bike rides to fundraise for worthwhile causes, and this included a Keswick to Silloth run on Sunday 22nd August 2021, raising £1269.43 from donations on the day for Blood Bikes Cumbria and The Great North Air Ambulance Service.

During Christmas in 2021 The North West Bikers helped fellow rider and Facebook Group member Shane Thompson who was diagnosed with life-threatening tuberculosis. Shane endured around 3 months of severe illness and alongside his partner and 2 young children had an extremely difficult time, especially in the run-up to Christmas. Also, around the time of contracting tuberculosis, Shane’s beloved bike a Suzuki GSXR broke, with no obvious clues as to what had stopped it from working. Without being able to attend work due to sickness, Shane wasn’t receiving any income and therefore had no idea when he could afford to fix his bike. Also, apart from riding his bike as a hobby, the Suzuki GSXR is Shane’s main mode of transport to work.

To help support Shane and his family during this difficult time, the North-West Bikers Group kindly arranged for Lakeland Motorcycles to repair the bike and delivered it to Shane’s home on Christmas Day morning.  The bike cost over £700 to be fixed and the bill was paid by using the profits raised from selling branded NWB hoodies and merchandise. The surplus money collected was donated to the family through a GoFundMe donation page setup online to further support them. The NWB group members also provided the family with a selection of toys and present's for their children.

More recently, on the 27th of March 2022, The North West Bikers arranged another fundraising run, in response to the current war in Ukraine. During the run 100 bikers convoyed from Workington to Keswick passing through Cockermouth main street and the back of Bassenthwaite Lake. Kind donations from participants of the run and local businesses led to £1,179.41 being donated to the British Red Cross DEC Ukraine Appeal.

The North West Bikers (Cumbria) Facebook group has now reached over 2400 members and are looking forward to organising more fundraising bike rides to start in 2022.
